This Saturday, June 13th, Capitol Hill Seattle Blog and Sustainable Capitol Hill are teaming up to put on the "Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale" which is a fantastic idea, IMO. Coming from NYC, the idea of yard sales and Garage sales had become pretty alien to me. It seems that every weekend from April through September, but Especially in May and June, the streets of Seattle's neighborhoods are bursting with tag sales, yard sales, rummage sales, and Pink and Yellow neon or cardboard or plywood signs crop up at every intersection announcing these sales. I remember thinking early on in my tenure in Seattle "Why doesn't someone coordinate this?"

Growing up in a suburb of NYC it seemed like there were coordinated tag sales, either a group or organization would host one in a church parking lot, or a neighborhood or block would have one. Well, much to my delight, this year (and I guess I might have missed it last year) there is a community-wide garage sale. It seems like many of my neighbors on the hill didn't get the memo, which is unfortunate, but many have, and I among them will be putting out some books, and kitchen ware (pots, plates, bowls, and some glasses) as well as a few other odds and ends. My sale will go from about 11AM to 2PM. 431 12th Ave E between Republican and Harrison.

I've also created a generic sign (see attached) that other people can use and fill in their times...

Just about a month ago I returned from the NTEN NTC in San Francisco where I had the opportunity to talk with Peggy Duvette, Angus Parker of WiserEarth and Leif Utne of Zanby and organizing force behind Open Wiser. I then blogged about the OpenWiser fundraising drive to raise $10,000 to build an open API to WiserEarth’s database of information about organizations around the world working towards a more sustainable civilization. CivicActions offered a matching donation to help reach the goal, and today Leif posted an update that the goal has been reached and work has already begun on the API. If you are a developer, join the WiserEarth API Developer group and learn how you can use the API. Thanks to all who donated to the effort. Now lets unleash our creativity on ways to use the...
