Bush Touts renewable energy, but cuts budget for research

In a classic George Bush move, the President specifically singled out wind and bio-mass as alternative energy sources that we as a nation should explore to help ween us of our dependence on oil… our 100 year adiction. I guess the president knows a little something about kicking a habit. It was one of those moments in the SOTU that made me gasp, but I knew it was too good to be true.

This from the NYT:

The Energy Department will begin laying off researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the next week or two because of cuts to its budget.

A veteran researcher said the staff had been told that the cuts would be concentrated among researchers in wind and biomass, which includes ethanol. Those are two of the technologies that Mr. Bush cited on Tuesday night as holding the promise to replace part of the nation’s oil imports.

Praise wind and bio-mass, cut the budget. It is the Bush kiss of death
