Last week I was back in NY and walking down Avenue A. I ran into Judy Bodor, wife of Nick, the owner of Alt.Coffee. She mentioned to me that Alt would be closing this week after nearly 12 years! The NY Times marks the passing in an article today.
A few weeks ago I participated in [l:http://www.mindspring.com/~boombox/xmas.htm|Unsilent Night] with my [l:http://gregoryheller.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=198| little sound truck]
Without 60ft long articulated buses rumbling by, and no trains on the williamsburg or manhattan bridges, light traffic on both of those and the FDR drive, the Transit sStrike has made my corner of the city pretty quiet.
In case you didn't know it, we are on the brink of a transit strike here in NYC. The effects of which, in the last week before the Christmas and Chanukka Holiday season would be devastating on NYC residents and people who work here. Compound the holiday with the frigid weather, and it is a recipe for disaster. I've gotta say that I am typically pretty sympathetic to the municipal labor unions in their demands. For years under Giuliani they got the short end of the stick.
